Rheological Additive Overview

At Qinghong, we focus on rheological additives based on bentonite and organoclay technology for solvent-based and water-based formulations. With multiple grades available for different solvent polarities, processing conditions and end-use requirements, Qinghong Rheological Additives are suitable for applications including paints and coatings, printing inks, sealants, lubricating grease, oilfield drilling and selected water-based formulations. Qinghong Rheological Solutions

Solvent-Based Solutions

Our solvent-based rheological additives are organoclay-based materials developed to support viscosity control, thickening, anti-settling, sag resistance, thixotropy and suspension in coatings, printing inks, sealants and other compatible solvent systems.

Water-Based Solutions

802-B is our modified bentonite rheological additive for water-based systems. It offers excellent thixotropy, easy incorporation and dispersion, and suitability across a pH range of 6–10 in a 10% suspension.

Formulation Flexibility

Different formulations require different rheological behavior. Our range covers low-, medium- and high-polarity solvent environments together with water-based systems, helping formulators match rheology control with solvent, processing and application requirements.

Paints and Coatings

Our rheological additives are widely used in paints and coatings where viscosity, pigment suspension and application stability must be controlled. Depending on the selected grade, Qinghong products can serve industrial paint, anti-corrosion paint, marine and boat coatings, automotive primers, wood coatings, road paint and other solvent-based coating systems. 802-B extends our range to emulsion paint and water-based paint formulations.

Inks and Sealants

In printing ink formulations, rheology control supports suspension, dispersion and anti-settling behavior, helping maintain consistent handling during production and use. Qinghong grades including 801-D, 808, CP-1, 827 and CP-27 are listed for printing-ink-related applications. Several solvent-based grades are also suitable for sealing compounds or sealing materials where thickening and controlled flow are important.

Industrial and Water-Based Uses

Beyond coatings, inks and sealants, our rheological additives serve other industrial formulations. 881-A is designed for drilling mud and oilfield applications, while CP-1 also covers oilfield drilling and lubricating grease. For water-based formulations, 802-B can be used in pigment paste, sizing materials, toothpaste and cosmetics, providing thixotropic control with easy incorporation and dispersion.

Viscosity Control

Our rheological additives help build and manage viscosity so formulations maintain suitable consistency during storage, processing and application. The appropriate grade and addition level should be confirmed through formulation testing.

Suspension Stability

Organoclay rheology helps keep pigments and fillers suspended within compatible formulations, reducing hard settling during storage and supporting more uniform material distribution before processing or application.

Thixotropy and Sag Resistance

Controlled thixotropy allows viscosity to decrease under shear and recover when the formulation returns to rest, supporting easier application while helping reduce unwanted sagging on vertical surfaces.

Dispersion Performance

Proper dispersion is essential for rheological efficiency. Depending on grade and solvent polarity, high shear, a polar activator, pre-gel preparation or direct addition may be required during formulation.

Qinghong bentonite-based rheological additives provide functions including thickening, thixotropy, anti-settling, sag resistance, suspension, dispersion and leveling, depending on the selected grade and formulation system.
What Does a Rheological Additive Do?
Its role is not limited to increasing viscosity. A suitable rheological additive helps establish the flow profile required during storage, mixing and application while supporting pigment or filler suspension and controlling unwanted settling or sagging in compatible formulations.
Which Qinghong Grade Should I Choose?
Selection depends on whether the system is solvent-based or water-based, the polarity of the solvent, processing equipment, activation method, application and required rheological performance. We recommend evaluating the appropriate grade and dosage through formulation testing before production.
Solvent-Based or Water-Based Additive?
Our solvent-based range mainly consists of organic ammonium montmorillonite organoclay grades developed for different solvent polarities and processing conditions. 802-B is modified bentonite designed for water-based systems, offering thixotropy together with easy incorporation and dispersion.
